Staff and students from the Contemporary Music department have been collaborating with an artist, Ballet Cymru and a male voice choir on a very interesting cross-discipline project.

Cold Rolling is a dance/sonic experience inspired by the South Wales valleys town of Ebbw Vale, once the largest steel production site in Europe. John Hardy, our Head of Contemporary Music, is working with the artist Tanja Raman, Ballet Cymru and the local male voice choir, made up of many former steel workers. They’ve been at the college rehearsing and recording the soundtrack for the piece in our new Dora Stoutzker Hall, which will then be remixed by creative music technology students.

The project is part of Adain Avion, a mobile art space created from the fuselage of a DC-9 airplane that will tour Wales in the summer of 2012. It will be part of the London 2012 Festival and the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

Cardiff Design Festival kicks off this weekend, with a host of events, workshops and exhibitions taking place throughout the city.

Here at the RWCMD as part of the festival, you can see an exhibition of giant paper sculptures by our BA and MA theatre designers. Last year, there were giant insects lurking in the college grounds and this year, you can expect giant wading birds made from recycled materials – all inspired by Edward Lear’s The Pelican Chorus.

We’re also hosting Sounds Digital, a week-long celebration of sound design installations in our new Linbury Gallery.

Entry to both events are free. See you here.

As well as our hundreds of terrifically talented students here at RWCMD, our staff get up to some pretty amazing things too.

Head of Contemporary Music John Hardy has composed the music for Radio 4’s Life and Fate, starring Kenneth Branagh and David Tennant. 13 episodes will be broadcast over a week from Sunday 18th September.

John worked on the project with another member of staff, Rob Whitehead. And you’ll hear fourth year student Maximillian Powell playing the hammer-dulcimer on the soundtrack.

During the final year of her BMus course here at RWCMD, composer Jo spent six weeks on a professional work placement with music composer and producer Tyler Bates in Los Angeles. She has since relocated to Hollywood to take up a permanent position as Bate’s assistant and has received her first CD credit for her work on the soundtrack for Emilio Estevez’s new film, The Way.

“I have an apartment in the centre of Hollywood two blocks from the walk of fame and travel 10 minutes in to the Hollywood Hills to the studio for work everyday. I have my own studio at Tyler’s place!

I arrived here during post- production for the film Sucker Punch (from the director of Watchmen & 300). I spent my first few weeks on the Alfred Hitchcock Dubbing Stage in Universal Studios mixing music with sfx, dialogue, foley etc. It was the most amazing experience with the top dogs in sound in the industry! I also attended the Orchestral & Choral recording sessions at Warner Brothers & Capitol Records.

I’m currently the Music Editor for the Cartoon ‘Sym Bionic Titan’ which shows on Cartoon Network weekly. The director is fantastic and created Powerpuff Girls & Dexters Lab. The music is always varying in genres throughout each episode- so it’s pretty fun!

Last year I worked on Emilio Estevez’s film ‘The Way’ which has just been released in the UK along with an Official Soundtrack & I am credited on the CD Soundtrack for my involvement during my work experience. My first real credit!

We are currently working on the re-make of Conan the Barbarian which the music is sounding amazing for…. you’re all in for a treat!

I am pretty settled now & look forward to work every day. Each day is exciting and I learn something new. I feel so privileged to have received this life changing job and am thankful to all of you for everything that you have taught me in order for me to obtain it!
I am literally living the dream now! The Sucker Punch film has huge billboards all over Sunset Strip & Hollywood Boulevard so I feel extremely excited and overwhelmed every time I see them to be in this position.”
